When you’re a family that travels a lot, your kids get used to being away from home, but this doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be able to have their own hobbies. Of course, if it’s club based activities then they will have to miss out on them while you’re away, but they should also have hobbies that they can continue doing while you’re traveling around. That’s why we’ve written a list of things that you can consider trying to encourage them to take up! They don’t have to if none on the list appeal to them, but it’s a good starting point if nothing else.

So, keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Games

We’re going to kick things off by recommending that they look into gaming in some capacity. Now, if you’re not a massive fan of video games, you can always set a limit that you think is reasonable. This way, they get to do something that they enjoy, but they don’t game to excess and you don’t end up worried about them.

But, video games are not the only type of game and that’s what you need to remember. It might be the case that your kids decide they like playing word games such as wordle, word searches, crosswords or things like this. Or, they may prefer to play card based games. The great thing about the world of gaming is that there are so many options, and they can choose what they like, still being able to do this from a car, boat, plane or a foreign country.

Reading

Some people think that reading is boring, but others fall in love with it. Your kids are never going to know if they like it until they give it a try, and this means trying out a range of genres, not just reading one book they don’t like and giving up on it entirely. Reading can be done from anywhere, either on a device like a Kindle or with physical books, depending on what is easier and more convenient or based on personal preference.

It’s a great way to pass the time when you’re traveling, as many people find themselves lost between the pages of a good book. There are entire worlds built between those pages, real emotions that you feel for people who aren’t real, and worlds that you find yourself wishing you could live in. it’s certainly something for them to try out!

Crochet

Another thing that children might like to do while traveling is crochet, knitting, or even sewing. However, be careful if you are trying to get through customs with sharp implements. Check out the rules and regulations before you go. The last thing you want to deal with is having your children’s hard work thrown away by a big scary man or woman.

Learning to crochet can be incredibly difficult so your child will need to have oodles of patience. You can teach them if you know how to do it yourself or you can show them videos with how to guide. Alternatively, if they are skilled already then get some books with patterns and ideas that they can take with them while you are traveling. By the end of your trip they could have created something amazing that you can treasure forever.

Writing Stories

Finally, there is so much fun to be had with writing stories while you are traveling. Stories can be written in a couple of formats, you could use a good old fashioned pen and paper or you could use offline platforms on an iPad or other tablet. If you are using an aeroplane to travel to your chosen destination then you won’t be able to connect to the internet. However, children can type so that their progress is saved for when they reconnect.

If you are using pen and paper to record their stories then be sure to have a couple of spare pens, the last thing you want is for them to be lost or even run out of ink. Make sure the children keep their backpacks safe as they also don’t want to lose their story. You never know it could become a bestseller.

So there you have it, fun hobbies that kids can do while traveling. These can be wonderful, especially on long journeys where you just need some peace and quiet. Hobbies for the kids can keep them entertained for hours, especially useful if you are driving to your destination.
