Dealing with Depression

 

Depression can drain your drive, hope, and energy while making it difficult to take any steps that might help you feel better. Overcoming this isn’t easy or quick, but it’ also not impossible. You might not be able to just snap out of it, but you might have more control than you might think.

So How do You Deal with It?

Dealing with depression will require a bit of action. The type will depend on the level of depression. You might have to deal with it in an inpatient program, in one of the best intensive outpatient programs, or with a therapist in a casual outpatient situation. Taking action can be difficult though.

Sometimes, just sitting down and quietly thinking about what you should do to make yourself feel better – like spending time with friends or exercising – can seem to be an insurmountable obstacle.

The first step will always be the hardest one. Going out for a walk or getting up and moving to the beat of your favorite song are things that you can do right now, and it might help. Actually, something like this can boost both your energy and your mood for a few hours – long enough for you to put a second step into action – like going out to see an old friend or cooking dinner.

Therapy

Sometimes, there might not be any other choice but therapy. There are quite a few different types that can help with depression.

Interpersonal therapy – This type of therapy doesn’t typically last for years. The sessions are ones that are structured. Interpersonal therapy is based on the premise that the relationships you have are at the root of your depression. The goal here is to assist patients in improving skills like conflict resolution and communication.

Social Skills therapy – With this type of therapy, patients learn how to establish relationships that are healthy. The goal here is for the patient to be able to improve their communication skills and learn the art of building strong social networks with a variety of people based on respect and loyalty.

Psychodynamic therapy – This is often portrayed in pop culture and movies. It involves assisting patients to explore their unhealed and unconscious emotional wounds from their past. The goal here is to assist people in learning how the depression they are feeling is related to unresolved conflicts and experiences in their past. Therapists assist their patients with addressing those things so that they will be able to move on with their lives in a productive fashion.

Supportive counseling – This is totally unstructured and focuses solely on listening to patients. Patients can talk about whatever is stressing them that they wish to talk about and the therapist will use empathy in order to provide both support and understanding.

Other Options

There may be times when depression leads to other things, like addictions, or is so severe that it needs to be treated in a facility or with certain medications. Don’t let the fear of this stop you from getting the help you need. It might just save your life.
