Why Some People Can’t Just “Calm Down” When They’re Upset

There’s always someone ready with the advice to “just calm down” or “don’t let it bother you so much.” As if the person spiraling hadn’t already thought of that. As if they’re choosing to stay upset when they could simply decide to feel better.

The reality is messier than that. Some people can shake off stress relatively quickly, while others get knocked sideways by things that seem manageable to everyone else. Their nervous system reacts like the building’s on fire when it’s really just a slightly tense conversation or an unexpected schedule change. And then they can’t come back down for hours, sometimes days.

This isn’t about being dramatic or lacking coping skills. It’s about how their nervous system learned to work, often based on things that happened years or even decades ago.

When the Nervous System Gets Wired Differently

Everyone’s nervous system has the same basic job: detect threats and respond to them. When danger shows up, the system activates. Heart rate goes up, muscles tense, focus narrows. Once the danger passes, things should settle back to normal. That’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway.

But for some people, that settling process never quite happens. Their system gets stuck in a state of high alert, treating minor stressors as major threats and staying activated long after the triggering event has passed. What looks like overreacting is actually their nervous system doing what it’s been trained to do, which is assume danger until proven otherwise.

This pattern usually starts early. Kids who grow up in unpredictable or stressful environments, where they never quite know what to expect, develop nervous systems that stay vigilant. Maybe there was a parent with addiction issues, or frequent moves, or chronic illness in the family, or just a general sense that things could go wrong at any moment. The child’s brain learns that safety is temporary and threats could be around any corner, so it stays ready to respond.

The Pattern That Sticks Around

Here’s what makes this particularly frustrating: the nervous system doesn’t update its threat assessment based on current circumstances. Someone might be in a stable, safe situation now, but their body still responds as if they’re in the environment where they learned these patterns. A raised voice triggers the same physiological response as an actual threat. A minor criticism feels like a catastrophe. Uncertainty of any kind sets off alarm bells.

The person dealing with this often knows their reaction doesn’t match the situation. They can see that the thing upsetting them isn’t actually dangerous. But knowing that doesn’t help, because the nervous system isn’t running on logic. It’s running on deeply ingrained patterns that formed when the brain was still developing and learning how to interpret the world.

Working with a therapist for anxiety disorder often focuses on retraining these automatic responses, teaching the nervous system that it can relax without something bad happening. This takes time though, because those neural pathways have been reinforced thousands of times over many years.

What Dysregulation Actually Feels Like

When someone’s nervous system is dysregulated, they don’t just feel anxious or upset. The whole body gets involved. There’s the racing heart and shallow breathing, sure, but also the gut churning, the tension headache, the feeling of being completely exhausted yet unable to rest. Some people describe it as feeling outside their body, watching themselves react but unable to control it.

The emotional experience can swing wildly too. One minute there’s anger, the next it’s panic, then maybe numbness or complete overwhelm. These aren’t separate emotions but rather the nervous system cycling through different threat responses, trying to find one that works. It’s chaotic and exhausting, and it makes perfect sense why someone in this state can’t just “calm down” on command.

Sleep becomes almost impossible during these episodes. Even when the body is physically tired, the nervous system stays activated. Lying in bed just means lying there with a racing mind and tense muscles, unable to drift off because the internal alarm system won’t switch off.

The Trauma Connection Nobody Wants to Talk About

Not everyone who struggles with nervous system dysregulation has experienced what people typically think of as trauma. There weren’t necessarily huge dramatic events. But trauma isn’t just about what happened, it’s also about what didn’t happen. Kids who didn’t get consistent emotional support, who had to manage big feelings alone, or who learned that expressing needs wasn’t safe, can develop the same dysregulated patterns as those who experienced more obvious trauma.

The nervous system needed certain experiences to learn regulation: being soothed when upset, having emotions validated and normalized, seeing adults manage stress in healthy ways. When those experiences were missing or inconsistent, the developing brain had to figure out regulation on its own. And the strategies it came up with, while adaptive at the time, often don’t work well in adult life.

This is why telling someone to calm down doesn’t help. Their nervous system never fully learned how to do that in the first place. They’re not refusing to calm down or being difficult, they literally don’t have the neurological pathways that make that process automatic and easy.

Why Some Stress Hits Harder Than Others

People with nervous system dysregulation often notice that certain types of stress affect them way more than others. Interpersonal conflict might send them into a tailspin while a work deadline feels manageable. Or maybe uncertainty is the killer but actual crises bring strange clarity.

These patterns usually relate back to the specific ways their nervous system got shaped. If unpredictability was the main childhood stressor, then unexpected changes feel intolerable now. If criticism or anger from caregivers was the threat, then any hint of disapproval triggers a massive response. The nervous system is reacting to the old threat, not just the current situation.

Understanding this can help with the shame that often comes with these reactions. It’s not a character flaw or personal weakness when someone gets more upset than the situation seems to warrant. It’s a nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do to try to keep the person safe, even though the strategy isn’t helpful anymore.

What Actually Helps

Fixing nervous system dysregulation isn’t about learning to suppress reactions or “be stronger.” It requires actually retraining the system through repeated experiences of safety and co-regulation. This means working with someone who can help the nervous system learn that it’s okay to relax, that upset feelings can happen without spiraling into crisis, and that coming back to baseline is possible.

Body-based approaches often help more than just talking about feelings. Learning to notice physical sensations without judgment, practicing grounding techniques that bring attention back to the present moment, and gradually building tolerance for uncomfortable emotions all help rewire those automatic responses.

The process isn’t quick, which frustrates a lot of people. They want to just be better already, to stop having these intense reactions that feel so out of proportion. But the nervous system learned its current patterns over years, and it takes consistent practice to build new ones. Small improvements compound over time though, until one day the person realizes they handled something that used to completely derail them and barely noticed the difference.

Moving Forward

Living with a dysregulated nervous system means dealing with reactions that other people don’t understand. The advice to calm down, while well-meaning, completely misses what’s actually happening. These aren’t chosen responses that can be simply switched off through willpower or positive thinking.

But nervous system patterns can change. The brain stays flexible throughout life, capable of forming new pathways and learning different responses. It requires the right support and consistent practice, but people absolutely can develop better regulation over time. They can learn to notice when their system is getting activated and have tools that actually help bring it back down. The reactions might not disappear completely, but they become less intense, shorter, and easier to manage. That’s not about becoming a different person, it’s about giving the nervous system what it needed all along to function the way it was meant to.
