The growth of the internet has undoubtedly been a beneficial development but there is a proven correlation between increasing screen time and our overall health. With reports that a third of children are apparently obese or overweight, increasing mental health issues and a decrease in general activities, we need to ensure we prioritise our family’s health as best we can. Here are some ways that you can do just that.
Decrease screen time
Between our mobile phones, tablets, laptops and TVs, we always seem to be focused on one kind of screen or another. Limiting screen time is beneficial to overall health and keeping mobile phones out of the bedroom completely. Light emitted from screens interferes with the brain’s sleep cycle, so turn off the television a little while before bedtime rather than just before heading off to the land of nod for a decent night’s sleep.
Move more
Incorporating activity into our every day lives is not as hard as you might think and there is plenty to do as a family. Long walks or hikes, bike rides or swimming are all activities that are inexpensive to do and easy to access. It might be an easy excuse for us girls to put off activities during certain times of the month but with the range of teen products from Lil-Lets you can stay confident, whatever you do.
Watch what you eat
Treats and takeaways are well and good but keeping them in moderation and balancing them with healthier fruit, nut and vegetable snacks is key to keeping your body in tip top condition. Your bodies are undergoing a lot of changes during the teen years, both physically and mentally, so a healthy diet is vital. You don’t have to give up the treats completely, just be mindful of how much of them you are consuming.
Take time for you
Talking of being mindful, taking time out just for you is something everybody should do. If we don’t look after ourselves, how can we be expected to look out for anyone else, and looking after yourself means taking care of body, mind and soul. Find a hobby you enjoy, take a long soak in the bath, read a book or chill out to your favourite playlist. Take a little time out of each day that is just for you.
