Considering A Winter Staycation? Here’s What You Need To Know

Everyone needs a little respite from work, being able to spend time relaxing and enjoying the company of family is what we all look forward to.

For most of us, the dream is to be sitting on a sandy beach being basked in sunlight. Unfortunately, sometimes the reality is a little different and our budgets don’t allow us the luxury of escaping away from bitter winds and freezing temperatures.

Though you may be stuck in the winter cold this doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of your staycation. No matter how small your budget is there are plenty of ways to enjoy family breaks at home, below are some great reasons why winter staycations are the new summer vacations.

Why choose a staycation?

First things first, a staycation is going to save you money in the long run. The costs quickly mount up when you have to take into consideration plane tickets, hotels, eating out and a bunch of other activities that you’ll end up doing abroad.

Have you really explored your local area? Probably not. Not travelling abroad gives you time to really delve into what your local area, city or country has to offer. The appeal of soft, sandy beaches will soon be forgotten when you realise there’s plenty to see and do staying at home.

The whole point of taking time off work is to relax and have quality family time, travelling itself can be stressful. Packing yours and the kids luggage, manic airports and trying to keep everyone entertained abroad may make your much-needed relaxation seem like a distant memory.

Most, if not all, of these issues, won’t even be a consideration if you opt to stay home and make the most of your local attractions.

Staycation Tips

Book time off well in advance

The first step to a successful staycation is to book of the appropriate time well in advance, the last thing you want to do is plan the perfect staycation that you’re then unable to make due to work commitments.

Depending on the amount of time you’re requesting off, work will want more advanced notice. It’s advisable to request holiday at least one month in advance.

Make the most of the weather

Cold weather doesn’t have to be negative. Halloween, Guy Fawkes and Christmas all take place during the autumn/winter seasons and they’re great opportunities to spend time with family. Maybe your plans to attend a Halloween house party or perhaps there’s a local firework display that you can attend for free, keeping the family entertained doesn’t have to cost money.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside there are plenty of indoor activities such as bowling, or ice skating that you can do. Searching for deals on sites like Groupon can also help save you a few bob.

Plan what you want to do

To make sure that you get the most out of your staycation it’s important to plan out what you want to do each day. The military precision may seem like it will spoil the fun but without a plan in place it’s likely that you won’t get around to doing half of the activities you want to.

Make a daily itinerary of things that you want to do while also allowing for free time.

Act like a tourist

No matter how long you’ve lived somewhere there are always hidden gems to explore, whether your staycations at home or a little further afield act like a tourist.
