A house move is said to be one of the most stressful events in a person’s life. But does it have to be? If your one of the million families that are moving homes this year, here are some great tips to send you on your way.
When negotiating a moving date, make sure your emotions don’t run away with you, think realistically about how long you need to pack up and clean the house you are leaving. Rushing can lead to hasty decisions and bad packing. Your possessions are important to you, don’t risk them getting damaged or broken.
Make a start with packing as early as possible but don’t pack anything you use on a regular basis. Start with rooms you don’t use and items that you don’t need or that are for a different season. Protect all items well with packaging and bubble wrap where necessary. Don’t forget to write what each box contains and its location. If you are using a moving company, they can usually supply you with everything you will need like boxes, tape and protective packaging.
It’s tempting to go full speed ahead and tackle more than one area at once but try to work methodically and concentrate on one room at a time. De-clutter as you go, assess what you don’t need or use anymore and find these items a new home. After all, what’s the point of packing and transporting things you don’t need!
If you have children, get them involved and make them feel part of the move. They will no-doubt have mixed feelings and perhaps be anxious about moving just like you so get them to help with packing. They can pack their own room and toys, make it fun and talk about where they will put their things in the new house. Suggest drawing pictures on their boxes so they know what is in them, but make sure they are packed and sealed safely.
To make the actual moving day less stressful, pack an essentials box with all the items you will need immediately. Items such as snacks, breakfast cereals and utensils to eat with. Anything you need for young children such as nappies, formula and baby food. Toiletries, first aid and tools can also be included in an essentials box.
A smooth move is dependent on your ability to be organised, motivated and positive in your approach. There is no denying that moving to a new house is a big event with its ups and downs, but keep calm and delegate!
