Twin Pregnancy Diary – 24 weeks 2 days

24 week twin pregnancy belly

It has been a pretty uneventful week here pregnancy-wise.  There have been no appointments to update you with and nothing out of the ordinary has happened which isn’t a bad thing.
This week we have hit the 24 week milestone which means that if the babies were to be born now they would be considered “viable” and have a good chance of surviving with a lot of medical help.  Of course, it would not be a great for them to be born early and the closer to their due date they can make it the better it is for them.

In order to mark this momentous occasion I have whipped out the measuring tape to see what my waistline now is.  The result…….. 42½ inches!

Oh good grief, there is no way I’m not going to hit fifty inches at least.  The maternity clothes I have are definitely not going to make it to the end.

Symptom wise I’m doing ok really. I am still very tired, thanks to the Thalassaemia Trait ensuring my iron levels are once again depleted during pregnancy.  The iron tablets I need to take to try and bring them back up cause constipation and so it’s a fun time all round in that respect.

I am slowing down a lot and feel it more each week.  I think by the time the end is nigh that I shall probably be a losing contender in the Snail Olympics, such is the ever-decreasing level of activity I am managing.  My back is beginning to feel a little more strained now with the extra weight it is needing to balance up and I am experiencing more frequent episodes of round ligament pain.  Night times are getting more difficult and my sleep is being disturbed as I wake up with my hips hurting or the ligament pains making themselves known. And we can’t go through a list of complaints without covering good old heartburn.

This all sounds like one big moan, I know, and I really don’t want it to be but I do want to keep a record of all the ups and downs in this pregnancy for posterity’s sake.  I can’t imagine any of these symptoms easing until the pregnancy is over. In fact, I don’t doubt for a second that the discomfort is going to get worse yet!

According to the Babycentre iPhone App each baby is about 30cm long and still waiting to lay down their fat stores.  Their brains are growing and taste buds are developing.  Isn’t it amazing to think that all of that is going on in there and for the most part we don’t give it a second thought?

This week I may start digging out the baby clothes and work my way through getting them washed and ready. That is my goal of the week.
