We’ve moved into the summer and it’s the perfect time to get the whole family together and make some unforgettable memories. If you’re part of a big family or you’re planning a get together with extended relatives, you know that it takes a lot more creativity and coordination to keep everyone entertained. Don’t worry though, because here are 6 ideas that are flexible, fun and great for groups of all ages.
- Get everyone together for a family meet up. For families that are spread across different locations, meeting at a central RV park can be an easy and cost effective way to reunite. Cabins, campsites, and open spaces means that there’s something for everybody, and you’re not always on top of each other either. Toddlers who want to run wild and grandparents who just want a comfy chair and some fresh air can all benefit.
- Organise a backyard movie night. You can turn your backyard or a big one in the family into an open air cinema. All you need is a projector, a white sheet or wall and some cosy blankets and bean bags. Add some snacks, glow sticks for the kids and you’ve got yourself a magical evening. You could take turns choosing movies or make it a double feature with something for the little ones first and then something for the grown-ups later.
- Hold a family Olympics. If you’ve got a competitive bunch among you, plan a day of friendly games and challenges. Think 3 legged races, water balloon tosses, and trivia contests. Divide into teams by family, branch, or age group and create simple medals or certificates for the winners. It’s a fun way to get everybody laughing and moving, and it works in almost any open space.
- Go on a scavenger hunt. Designing a scavenger hunt that spans a neighborhood park or even a beach is a great idea for big families. Dividing into teams and giving each other a group list of clues or items to find can make it more fun. Include challenges like snapping a photo with something red or finding a feather.
- Own food festival. Turn your meal time into the main event by hosting a DIY food festival. Set up different stations run by family members and assign every Group A different cuisine. You could have a Taco bar, a hot dog stand, a lemonade corner, or a dessert booth, or all of the above. Everyone gets to try a bit of everything, and even the picky eaters will find something they like.
- Create a time capsule. Get everyone involved in capturing the moment with a family time capsule. Have every person contribute something: a photo, a small object, a letter or a drawing. Seal it all in a weatherproof container and bury it in the garden to store away to open in five or ten years.
Larger families often come with more voices, more chaos, and more chances for fun. With a little planning and a spirit of adventure, summer can be full of laughter, bonding, and stories that get retold for years. Whether you’re gathered at an RV park or you’re just hanging out in someone’s yard, you’re about to have a great time.
