Stress can be a killer, so it’s vital to make sure that you are dealing with it as effectively as you can. Anything you can do to reduce your stress load is always going to be important, helping you to live a much more enjoyable but also a healthier life. When times are hard, and there is a lot going on however, it can be difficult to always do what you need to in order to manage your stress levels effectively. With that in mind, it’s something you might want to try and improve upon.

In this article, we will talk about some of the things you can do to manage your stress levels more effectively during difficult times in your life. Any of the following could help you out considerably, and you might find it especially useful in being able to look after yourself and keep your stress to a minimum.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

The first thing you should bear in mind here is not to simply pretend everything is fine when it isn’t. If you are going through a difficult time, you should make sure that you are acknowledging how you feel as fully as you can. In fact, really feeling the feelings is the best approach to getting through them and out the other side. So if you find yourself cutting off from your feelings or dissociating, try to avoid that – and instead, calmly and slowly hone in on what you are actually feeling in the moment.

This is a practice, so it does take time to get good at it, especially if you have a lifetime of ignoring your feelings behind you as most of us do. Regardless, with time and practice you’ll be able to do this more effectively and easily, and you’ll find that you are much more likely to manage the stress well, because you won’t be scared of what your body is feeling at any given moment.

Control What You Can, Let Go Of The Rest

There might be certain elements to your situation, whatever it may be, that you can control. So those are the things you should focus on if you want to make sure you are managing your stress levels effectively. A lot of time and energy gets wasted on trying to control things that are out of reach – forget about those. Just control what you can, and make sure that you are putting your full energy and effort into doing that as well as possible.

For the rest, just try to let go of it. This is not necessarily easy to do, and again it’s a practice so it takes time. But if you can learn to gently let go of things that you can’t do anything about, then that is going to make a huge difference all in all. You’ll find that you are freeing up a lot of personal energy and that you feel so much better from this. And it means you have much less to hold on to, so less stress.

Take Some Time For You

Whatever might be happening in your life, you always deserve to have some downtime just to yourself. This is something you might need to put some effort into finding, but however you do it, it’s going to really make a huge difference to how you feel. Essentially, this is an act of self-care, and it’s something that you are going to find really important in taking care of yourself as an individual and as a person.

The nature of that downtime is up to you. Whether you take a bath, read a book or play some freecell is completely for you to choose. The point is that you are doing something relaxing that you can really enjoy, and that you are doing it as well as you can. If you can do this, you’ll manage your stress levels so much more effectively.

Set Boundaries

A lot of people talk about boundaries, but few know how to actually set them. If you find yourself with a huge pile of stuff to deal with, you need to ask yourself how much of that is actually yours, actually belongs to you, and how much is the stuff of other people that you have said yes to in some way, whether implicitly or explicitly. If you are setting boundaries appropriately, then this isn’t going to happen so much, and you’ll be in a much better place emotionally, able to cope with what is going on a lot more effectively and easily.

So try it – learn to say no and to refuse what isn’t yours. There is a place for getting involved in people’s stuff, and a place for holding back, and it’s up to you to know when to do both of those things.

Lean On Your Support Network

Hopefully, you will have people around you whom you can lean on when times get tough. This is important because it helps ensure that you are going to feel supported, less alone, and therefore you’ll find you are much less stressed out. So all in all, this is something you should be able to do, and leaning on your support network is the kind of thing that is always going to be important to consider doing. Make sure you have people around you whom you can trust to talk to, and that will make a world of difference in all this.

Move Around

Finally, move your body. You don’t have to run a marathon, but if you can get some physical movement going, that is really going to help a great deal, and you’ll find that it means you have a lot less bodily stress going on in general. It’s amazing what a difference that can really make to your life, so you should think about what you can do to make this a reality and ensure that you are working at it.
