You’ve paid the balance, the calendar countdown has ended, and your long-awaited holiday is upon you. It’s going to be a week or two of fun, with sea, sand, and lots of food and drink. Hopefully, somewhere, there will be a bit of relaxation, too.

Planning the details for your trip is part and parcel of building the excitement. Once you arrive, you can release all of that energy and have the best time ever. However, one thing you likely didn’t plan for or anticipate is an accident or illness that scuppers your plans.

And being injured abroad is something that can really hamper your time away and ruin the entire trip.

But what can you do if something goes wrong, and what steps do you need to take if you need extra care or hospitalisation abroad?

Assess the Situation

In the first instance, you need to assess the situation so you can ascertain the type of care needed and what treatment is required. For some, a trip to the local pharmacy could be on the cards. Others might need hospital care, or a simple lie-down out of the sun might suffice for a mild case of sunstroke or food poisoning.

Notify People

Depending on the situation and the illness or injury you or someone you’re travelling with is experiencing, you need to contact any of the following people.

  • Resort/hotel management
  • Travel company reps on-site
  • Your insurance company
  • Other members of your group

This can help you get the appropriate care and make others aware of any serious issues, such as food poisoning or an injury due to damage in a hotel.

Get Evidence

Getting evidence of the circumstances can be tricky. If you trip over and hurt yourself on damaged flooring, taking a picture of this can be easy to do. The same is true if you are involved in a traffic collision or are hurt by another means, another person, for example. In cases of illnesses, it can be more tricky but always look for ways to gather evidence if you feel you will need it down the line.

Contact Your Embassy

If you experience an accident abroad, it’s crucial to notify your embassy. They can provide you with the assistance you need, especially in more serious cases. From arranging the right care to helping you get home, they can be a source of support and security. They can also assist with communication, particularly if you don’t speak the native language of the country you are in.

Talk to Travel Insurance

In the event of serious issues, it’s important to talk to your insurance company. They can provide financial protection if your trip is ruined through no fault of your own. You might be entitled to claim for medical care or repatriation efforts, which can provide reassurance in a difficult situation.

If your insurance company can’t help you, then you can talk to Personal Injury Solicitors. They can help you understand if you have a claim to make and what you might be entitled to. They can guide you through the process of seeking compensation if your trip was ruined through no fault of your own, especially if you need to pay for medical care or repatriation efforts.
