Moving house is extremely stressful. There is so much that you must consider on the day and the lead up to the day, that it is very easy to rush the process and want it done quickly. Unfortunately, this can lead to things being missed or mistakes being made. While it might seem small at first, by ensuring you complete these tasks, you will feel much better and make your life easier in the long run.
To help you on your journey to moving into your new home, here are some surprising things that people miss when they move house.
#1 Not cleaning the home
When you move house, it is very easy to just want to move all your belongings in and crash on the sofa. However, if you can delay this for a day, or even half a day, you will thank yourself later down the line. Many people will just move all their belongings into the property, and then at some point in the future, have to try and clean everything. Or not clean properly at all. While it might seem clean, you never know what is hiding underneath. You must get the keys and head to the property before moving your belongings, so you can clean everything without your stuff getting in the way. You can do a lot of this yourself. For bigger issues, you may wish to hire support, such as carpet cleaning professionals, pest control, and more.
#2 Not securing the property
You want the property to be secure, so you can rest at night with peace of mind. Unfortunately, you never know who has keys to the property. It is a good idea to secure the property when you first move in. You can do this by changing the locks and getting new keys to all the doors, windows and outbuildings. You may also wish to set up a camera doorbell and security system.
#3 Not assessing for risks and issues
The property is completely new to you. Likely, you have only seen it one, two or even three times. This has not given you a proper run down of the property, so you are not going to be aware of any hidden hazards. Check the property for any obvious hazards. You should also conduct an assessment of the plumbing and electrics to ensure it is all safe. Make a list of issues you find and get anything urgent sorted before you move in.
#4 Not making it their own
A really important thing that new property owners miss, is making it their own. They move in all their belongings and get comfortable quickly. While this is nice, you haven’t customised it and made it your own. This task often gets put off for a long time. It is a good idea, perhaps paired with your cleaning and risk assessment, to update the paint on the walls and consider what new furniture you would like to add to the home to make it your own.
Moving house is stressful enough, make sure you avoid making these mistakes.
