4 Fun Activities You Have to Do with Your Aging Loved Ones!

fun activities

Aging is often portrayed as a golden period filled with leisure, wisdom, and relaxation. Honestly, these are by far true; there’s no doubt about that. But while these are definitely perks, the reality for many older adults can be far less rosy.

So, as you know, as people age, they often face a host of challenges: health issues, loss of mobility and independence, and, on top of that, perhaps most significantly, loneliness. In fact, older adults are known to be the loneliest of all age groups, with many spending extended periods of time alone, leading to feelings of isolation and depression.

It’s easy to overlook just how important social interaction is for our aging loved ones. That’s why it’s super important to spend quality time with them. But beyond just being there, finding fun and engaging activities to do together can help them feel happier, more connected, and appreciated. So, with all of that said, here’s a list of enjoyable activities that will not only brighten their day but also strengthen their bond and create lasting memories.

Get Creative with Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts are an excellent way to tap into creativity, regardless of age. For older adults, crafting can be particularly rewarding because it provides a sense of accomplishment. Now, they need to do what they can to improve their cognitive health, and this is one way to go about it. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend time together, sharing stories or just chatting while working on your projects.

If your loved one has mobility or dexterity issues, consider simpler crafts like coloring or creating collages. Now, this might be challening (as coloring is usually tied to children) and they’re obviously not going to want to be infantilized. But overall, the key is to choose something that they will enjoy and find manageable, so they feel successful and happy with the result.

Take a Stroll Down Memory Lane

One of the most meaningful activities you can do with an aging loved one is to take a trip down memory lane. This might be the best activity of all! Pull out old photo albums home videos, or even just sit down with a cup of tea and talk about their favorite memories. This can be an incredibly uplifting experience for them, as it reinforces their sense of identity and the richness of their life story.

You might learn things about your loved one that you never knew before, and they’ll likely enjoy the chance to share their history. Plus, reminiscing can be a powerful tool for combating loneliness, as it reminds them of the full and vibrant life they’ve led, full of people who love and care for them.

Explore Nature Together

Now, not everyone can do this (again, mobility issues), but if you’re able to do it, then 100% you should absolutely do it! So, with that all said, there’s something about being in nature that refreshes the spirit, and that’s no different for older adults.

Now, a simple walk in the park, a visit to a botanical garden, or even just sitting on a bench enjoying the fresh air can do wonders for their mood. If they’re in a wheelchair, then a botanical garden might be the best fit due to how most of them tend to have concrete sidewalks. But a park could work too (depending on the park, of course).

But if the mobility issues is just far too and then you could look into setting up a small indoor garden or place bird feeders outside a window they frequently sit by. Watching the birds and caring for plants can be incredibly soothing and provides something to look forward to each day.

Play a Game

So coloring was mentioned earlier, and yes, to a degree, that can be a tad controversial as it’s seen for kids. But with that all said, games aren’t just for kids—everyone loves a little friendly competition! Besides, playing games is a great way to keep the mind sharp while having fun (that’s why nowadays, it’s so heavily pushed for elderly people to play mobile games and video games).

So basically, board games, card games, or even puzzles can be a delightful way to spend an afternoon. You both could play a game of classic chess or even play that game together online, or they can even play alone on a computer (as there are plenty of online and digital-based versions of traditional games). But either way, they need to keep their mind stimulated.

You can’t go wrong with video games either, especially if you can’t see them as often as you’d like. For example, you both could play an online video game together when you can’t physically see them. Even games like Animal Crossing offer this (granted, you need a Nintendo online subscription).
