Is your kitchen old? Outdated? Boring? Not to your taste? Completely falling apart? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you might be thinking about renovating and changing the entire space to look new, fresh, and much more modern. Whether you’ve just moved in and you want to make your home feel like your own, or you’ve lived somewhere for a while and you want to make some changes, there are definitely some things to think about before you dive headfirst into a kitchen renovation, and planning ahead is exactly the right place to begin. With that in mind, read on to find out how to plan a kitchen renovation.

What Can You Keep?

Although your first thoughts when it comes to a kitchen renovation might be that you have to rip everything out and start from scratch, that might not be entirely necessary – it might be that you can actually keep at least some elements from your current kitchen and reuse or repurpose them for the new one.

It’s going to depend on what you want the final look to be, of course. For example, if you’re going from a traditional country kitchen to a contemporary minimalist one, there might not be a lot you can save, but if you’re going for similar styles in a new color or perhaps just updated to be more modern, you could potentially keep the cabinet carcasses and just add new doors. Or perhaps you’ll keep the lighting or the flooring. Then there are your appliances – again, don’t just throw them out if there’s no need to. If there’s nothing wrong with them, you can keep them as they are, and if they’re not working so well, get some appliance parts and make repairs; it’s a lot less expensive than buying brand-new versions.

Think About The Layout

Whether you’re getting rid of everything and starting from scratch or you’re keeping some elements of your old kitchen, renovating the space is the perfect opportunity to have a good think about the layout and make changes if you need to. What you want to end up with is a kitchen that’s functional and looks good, so consider how you personally use the room – what do you cook and how do you prepare the food? Is it a space for one person to spend time in or should it be a communal room? How much storage do you need and where should it go?

The best thing to do is to pay attention the next time you’re cooking something and note down where you tend to place items, which area of the worktop you prep food on, where the most useful tools need to be, and so on. Then you can create a new kitchen that’s perfect for you and makes using it a lot easier.

Have A Budget

It’s fun to plan renovations to make your home look and feel much better, but it’s not so much fun paying for them, especially if you spend a lot more than you thought you would or intended to.

That’s why you need to come up with a budget before you do anything else – and you need to make sure it’s a realistic one. Consider what money you have in savings that can go towards the renovation, or how much you can spare each month if you decide to opt for a repayment plan or use a credit card. Having a new kitchen is fantastic, but getting into debt is not.
