How Tight Should a Dog Harness Be?

A dog harness is an ultimate way to be able to work and communicate with your dog while still being able to keep them comfortable and know you’re working at their level.  There are hundreds of different brands that come in dozens of various sizes, styles, and effectiveness, so it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you buy one.

This is a walk-through on how to fit your dog’s harness as well as possible and why it matters.

Why Use a Harness Instead of a Collar?

Using a harness instead of a collar is the best choice you can make for your dog!  Not only does it keep your pup as comfortable as possible, but it also makes it easier for you to guide them and get them out of hazardous situations.

For dogs like pugs and Boston terriers, a harness is a must since it can save them from medical emergencies.

You can still keep a collar on your dog if you’re more comfortable with that, but your leash should be attached to the harness only.  Make sure your harness has identifying tags and information on it so people can contact you if your furry friend escapes.

How Snug Should Your Harness Be?

Your dog’s harness should be snug enough that it can’t escape it but loose enough that you can fit a couple of fingers between the harness and your dog without trouble.  You should also make sure that there are at least two inches of open space around your dog’s armpits since this will let them keep their full range of motion.

How to Tell the Right Size

The best way to tell if your dog harness is the right size is to watch and see if your dog is able to move around in it comfortably.  Use the snug test to ensure your fingers fit between them, and of course, check for space with underarm rub, but also see if your dog’s ability to hold its head is as high as usual.  Check if your pup can maintain the same walk and run they usually can.  If so, then this harness could be a great choice for you!

Why Can’t I Trust Large, Medium, and Small?

Although it would be great if you could trust these simple sizes, there’s no regulation between brands to make sure that when they say large, they all mean the same size.  This is why you should measure your dog and consult the sizing charts companies offer every time you buy a harness.

The differences can mean your dog is uncomfortably tight in a harness, or they’re swimming in it because it’s so loose.  Double-check sizing charts before you buy!

A  Dog’s Harness Should Be Perfect For Them

Whether this is the first time you’ve purchased a harness for your dog or you’re struggling to get the right one for them, it’s okay to be picky!  Take your time and find the perfect harness that makes both of you comfortable while also looking great!
