When the time comes to start applying to schools for your child, you may feel excited, overwhelmed or a little bit of both. There’s no doubt it can be a daunting experience for parents, even if it isn’t the first time you’ve had to do it. After all, there’s much to consider and you’ll need to weigh up all of your options. Here’s some advice from a prep school in Buckinghamshire to get you started.
Consider Your Main Requirements
Have a think about what you want from the school and your key priorities as a family. Do you want to send your child to an independent school? If so, what is your budget? Do you want it to be single-sex or co-educational? Are you hoping there will be boarding provisions? Does your child have any special educational needs that need to be supported? Once you understand what it is you’re actually looking for, it should be easier for you to narrow down your search.
Do Some Research
Most schools have decent enough websites that will allow you to get a good idea as to whether or not you’re interested in applying. You should be able to look at some of the previous inspection reports and exam results, to determine the quality of teaching. You will also be able to find out a little more about the curriculum, including what extra-curricular activities are available to the students.
Attend Open Days
Visiting the schools that you have shortlisted will give you a true indication of what the school is actually like. During your visit, be sure to chat to the staff and existing pupils and ask plenty of questions. You should also pay attention to the facilities; are they modern, clean and safe? If possible, take your child along on the visit and observe how they interact with their new surroundings. Ask them for their opinions afterwards, so that they feel involved in the process.
