Sleeping With Static – Should You Have A TV in Your Bedroom

After a long day at work, you walk into your home to the sound of silence. The house is dark and it’s close to your bedtime but you have not eaten, or worse yet, you have not gotten your fix of ‘name-any-popular-programme of the moment’. You shower and make a quick meal, left-over something, and then find yourself in front of the tube, except it’s in your bedroom.

Watching your favourite programme, you secretly thank your antenna installer in Melbourne that you have all of the latest digital technology and have so many channels to enjoy after a long day at the office. Having a television in your room is great as it allows you to be able to kick back and watch your favourite programme, day or night. However, while the verdict seems to be against sleeping with static, there are both pros and cons to watching the box in your room.

Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of having a television in your bedroom, so you can make the right decision for your home.

Staying In Tune And In Touch

Those with busy lives where every minute matters can actually catch up on all the news and missed entertainment in the little time they have before sleep with a television in the bedroom. While some might dismiss the importance of being informed, it’s always good to be aware of what is going on in the world. As for being entertained, staying in touch with social cues is a major part of watching TV programming such as the latest in fashion, music, film and more.

Decompression Tool

Regardless of the profession, sometimes everyone needs to just sit in front of the television and not do anything but enjoy the programming. In your bedroom, watching television requires little mental work, unless you want to throw some documentaries into the mix of course. In essence, it can be a free way to unwind at the end of the day with a favourite programme.

A Better Love Life

In Britain, having a television in the bedroom has been shown to increase the amount of ‘intimate encounters’ people have. One of the main reasons a bedroom television set has this impact in British households is due to at least a third of the country adding adult entertainment shows to their nightly viewing as of 2014. At the expense of sleep, many opt for other ways to entertain themselves in the bedroom.

Interrupts Sleep

One of the major disadvantages of putting a television in the bedroom is that it does interfere with sleep. The bright lights that flicker on glow when the television is off can be distracting. Moreover, it prevents sleep because blue lights interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for inducing sleep. Televisions in the bedroom interfere with sleep because the stimulation combined with stress can keep your mind awake and this stimulation is linked to insomnia.

Weight Gain

If the sleep cycle is interrupted over a long time, then this lack of sleep can result in weight gain. Researchers believe that a poor sleep cycle over time leads to weight gain in both children and adults because sleep deprivation interferes with the metabolism. Research also suggests that people gain weight because during the time they would normally sleep, they spend eating.

Relationship Intimacy

For some couples, television in the bedroom is linked to decreased intimacy. When couples are tuned into their favourite programme, it is hard to chat and enjoy each other’s’ company when both people are distracted by the television. Plus, important discussions between couples often occur in the bedroom and television can be a big distractor in these situations.

Remaining Static-Free

Television has to be one of modern technologies greatest connectors just in terms of being a communication tool alone. Ironically, this same tool can interfere in the intimacy between people and ruin conversation. In the bedroom, though, the television can have both positive and negative effects on our wellness. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make the right call for your lifestyle and decide where in your home is the best place for you to have your TV set up.
