Tips for Recovering from a Fitness Injury

 

You’re trying to live a healthier life. As a result, you’ve started eating the right things, eliminating stress, ridding your body of toxins, and working out. You’re doing good, until one day… you’ve hurt yourself during a workout. As careful as you’ve tried to be with stretching and using workout equipment and tools properly, you still managed to hurt yourself – badly. Though this setback may seem frustrating and you may be in a hurry to get back to your healthy regimen, the truth is, you must give your body time to recover. Below is a list of tips on how to do this:

 

Visit the Doctor

Whether it feels like a pulled muscle or a broken bone, when you’ve been injured during a workout it is best to visit the doctor for a full checkup. They can assess your body inside and out to determine the extent of the damage done and recommend the best course of action for recovery.

 

Use Prescriptions Sparingly

When you’re dealing with pain, it is a high possibility that your doctor could prescribe pain medication. Opiates like codeine, morphine, and hydrocodone are often prescribed as a solution for pain relief. Though the doctor ordered it, these drugs are often highly addictive and should be taken only as instructed and as needed. Abuse could result in addiction and the need to withdrawal. As the opiate withdrawal timeline can vary, it can take time to overcome this bad habit.

 

No Exercise

It can be hard to sit down now that you’ve adopted a new habit of exercising, but it is imperative to your health. When you’ve suffered an injury, you should allow your body time to heal which means no exercising at all.

 

Apply Heat

Heat is your best friend when it comes to injuries that include the muscles. As your body is trying to repair itself you can apply heat, such as from a heating pad to the injured area. The warmth helps to relax the muscles, therefore, losing a lot of tension.

 

Massages

A good rub down can go a long way to helping your muscles heal from an injury. So, if you’re feeling up to it, go and treat yourself to a massage (or ask a loved one to do it for you). Massage therapists know how to focus in on the area of injury without causing further pain or discomfort. Through various techniques they can help to release tension and improve blood flow for faster healing.

 

Watch What You Eat

Just because you’re home on the couch or in the bed recovering from your injuries doesn’t mean you should stuff your face with foods you know aren’t good for you. As your body is trying to recover, it will need a diet filled with vitamins and nutrients. This especially includes foods packed with vitamin c, protein, vitamin a, zinc, and antioxidants. Keep in mind that while gorging on junk food may be tempting, weight gain can make it more difficult for you to heal.

 

Get Back to it Gradually

Too much time on the couch could result in you losing all the progress you’ve put into your new healthy lifestyle and body. Therefore, as the doctor approves, and your body allows, you should get back to working out. Do so gradually so as not to re-injure yourself. Start by walking, lifting small dumbbells, or even doing something therapeutic like swimming to get back into the swing of things. As you feel better you can increase your workout time and intensity until you’re back to your pre-injury routine.

You’ve done so much to reach a point where you’re living a happy, healthier life. Don’t allow something like a workout injury to keep you down for too long. Accidents sometimes happen, but as long as you follow-up with a doctor, follow their orders, listen to your body, and give it the right fuel, your body will heal.
