Think of holiday destinations for families and your mind will likely turn to the Canary Islands, but there are other places on the globe that make for a perfect family vacation. Jamaica is one such place. Boasting warm weather, interesting activities and a sense of adventure, here are some of the things that you should do while on holiday with the family in Jamaica.
A day out at the beach
Doctor’s Cave, Montego Bay, isn’t a cave (shock horror!) but actually a beach. You have to pay to get on it, but that doesn’t stop this beach being one of the most popular in Jamaica. Open from 8.30 am until sunset, Doctor’s Cave spoils you with opportunities for kayaking, snorkelling, riding water scooters and other activities. Families don’t want to miss this!
Dunn’s River Falls
This natural wonder is quite possibly the biggest tourist attraction in Jamaica. Situated in Ocho Rios, this is a unique place to bathe and you can climb up to the top of the falls if you wish. Make sure you bring suitable swimming gear. The water is nice and cool and the trees provide plenty of shade. You can’t leave Jamaica without visiting these falls.
A day of adventure at Mystic Mountain
Have you ever been bobsledding before? You can at Mystic Mountain, Ocho Rios, thanks to the ride inspired by the Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. This outdoor adventure park also has a zipline, so you can go whizzing through the trees, and the view from the Sky Explorer chairlift through the forest is exquisite, showing you the coastline. It’s best to avoid the park on days that a cruise is calling in at the port.
Not necessarily a family attraction as such, but it seems a waste to go all the way out to Jamaica and not visit the birthplace of the island’s favourite son, Bob Marley. This town of Nine Mile is also the resting place of this man who inspired so many people with his music. As you travel to the resting place, you’ll be treated to a view of the countryside from way up the hills and into the mountains.
Blue Mountains National Park
Young or old, no visitor to Jamaica can fail to appreciate the beauty of this national park, the home of the world renowned Blue Mountains coffee. Many people come just for the coffee, but if you’re in good shape you should go hiking in the park or even take a bicycle tour. It’s better to come to this part of Jamaica with older teenagers, who will be able to withstand the hike better.
Jamaica is a fantastic place for families to visit and see something new. If you look carefully enough on the Internet for holiday options, you’ll come across some cracking cheap holidays. Book up and you can all be out there enjoying that sunshine!
