With the days already becoming noticeably shorter it won’t be long before we’re in the midst of cold, dark winter days once more.
There are some tried and tested ways to make your home lighter and brighter, not only through the winter months but all year round. Here are a few suggestions to banish the darkness from your home:
Replace your front door
Replacing solid front doors with one which incorporates glass panels is an effective way of bringing more light into dark hallways. If privacy is a concern you could opt for decorative design or etched glass which will allow the light in without compromising your privacy.
Let the light flow through
Continuing along this theme, why not replace internal doors too? Glazed panels are toughened ensuring safety for young children and over-excitable pets but will allow the light to flow in between rooms.
Add more windows
Okay, so it’s not necessarily a quick and easy option but if you’re making over a room to some extent already it might be worth considering doing if it’s particularly dark and gloomy. Alternatively let the light in from above with some slim-line Ultrasky roof lanterns. We have one of these in our kitchen and it really makes a whole lot of difference to the room – and everyone who visits loves it!
Change the lightbulbs
Replicate natural light with daylight lightbulbs to completely transform your room. No longer will you have to endure the sallow, yellow tones of traditional lightbults. If you haven’t tried daylight bulbs yet, give them a go. They’re fantastic!
Bring in the lamps
But not any kind of lamps. If you suspect that you are prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), adding a light therapy lamp or two in the rooms you spend the most time in during the winter months can help beat the feelings of depression the cold, dark months can bring to some.
Add a splash of colour
We’re not saying you should paint each room of your home a different colour of the rainbow but adding splashes of bright, bold colours with accessories can brighten the dullest of rooms. Change the curtains, add a matching rug, toss a throw or two on the sofa and watch the room transform!
Using mirrors to reflect the light back into your room can make a huge difference to the level of light within it. Whether you choose one large mirror over the fireplace or a selection of smaller mirrors to create a feature wall, you can be sure that your room will be completely transformed.
