It’s easy to have pre-conceived ideas about what life on a cruise entails. But it doesn’t all have to be black-tie dinners, after-dinner dancing and captain’s table chit-chat. In fact, it can be quite the opposite. Here are a few ideas to help you get the most out of your cruise.
Learn a new skill
Caribbean cruises and European ones offer a wealth of activities once you are on shore, but occasionally sea days can drag a little if you don’t think up a fun plan. Why not toss that trashy novel overboard and learn a new skill? A number of cruise lines offer online computer or digital photography courses, while others provide training in important life skills such as cake decorating, circus skills and mixology!
Get some exercise
If your primary form of exercise involves walking to the train station, a cruise holiday may afford you with the perfect chance to shape up. A number of lines have excellent gym facilities and offer classes in Pilates and yoga. If you’re looking to try your hand at a new sport, you won’t be disappointed either. Get on the outdoor climbing wall or challenge your kids to a spot of outdoor table tennis.
Enjoy yourself: it’s a cruise
A change of scene can do you good. Why not throw off the shackles and re-embrace your inner child? There are all kinds of games and quizzes to enjoy on cruise ships. Take the chance to let your hair down and be a little silly. Who knows when your next opportunity will be?
Take a step back from the world
For those who aren’t prepared to get their “cruise head” on, never fear. Most lines avail of a serenity deck where you can relax, away from the hordes of children enjoying themselves by the pool. Take a good book or a crossword and enjoy spending some time on your own for a change.
Eat, drink and be merry
A cruise is a holiday, after all. There’s nothing so desperately wrong with spending a large portion of your time on board eating and drinking. It’s perfectly possible to sample international cuisine every night. As for the array of drinks on offer, well, that can be left to your imagination. Suffice to say, a lunchtime mojito takes some beating against the backdrop of the clear blue sea.
The list above is by no means exhaustive. The most important person in all this is you. Decide why you’re going on a cruise and then choose your activities accordingly.
