If you’re looking for the perfect spot to enjoy a family sojourn in the sun, it’s hard to beat Tenerife. The largest of the Canary Islands, this popular destination in the Atlantic has plenty to offer parents and kids alike. Here are some highlights to look out for.
Splash Around in a Waterpark
If your tots love swimming pools and slides, make sure you schedule a trip to one of the island’s famous waterparks. A popular option among those keen to book flights to Tenerife is the Thai-themed Siam Park, often cited as one of the best attractions on the island. Since it opened its doors in 2008, this fun-filled attraction has been a hit with holidaymakers. Offering everything from lazy rides in rubber dinghies to white-knuckle slides, it’s a great place to spend a day.
Its sister resort, Loro Parque, is also worth a look. Tenerife’s longest-established theme park, Loro is home to an array of animals that will delight the kids including dolphins, orcas and sea lions. As well as these aquatic animals, you can expect to see everything from parrots to big cats and giant tortoises.
Whales and Dolphins
If you’d prefer to see nature in the wild, book a whale and dolphin watching trip. The coastline in this part of the Canaries is ideal for spotting these marine mammals. There are around 28 species of resident and migratory whales and dolphins to be found off the island’s shores. Boats set off from Los Cristianos harbour and Los Gigantes marina two or three times a day.
As well as these magnificent creatures, look out for turtles, sharks, rays and an array of sea birds.
Teide National Park
No trip to Tenerife would be complete without checking out the Teide National Park. This Unesco World Heritage site is dominated by the huge Mount Teide volcano, which rises to 3,718 metres above sea level, making it the highest peak in the whole of Spain. Even the drive to the park is fascinating. You’ll pass through Alpine scenery before emerging into an almost lunar landscape.
It is possible to reach the highest point on foot by taking a guided walk, but this isn’t something you should attempt with your kids in tow. Instead, head for the summit by cable car. Once there, you’ll be able to enjoy unrivalled views across Tenerife, and you’ll even be able to see the neighbouring islands of La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria.
Of course, these are just some of the attractions on offer in Tenerife. There are many more places for you and your family to explore while you’re on this sun-kissed island.
