On hearing our children’s names you could be forgiven for thinking that we were reciting the list of residents from the local old people’s home.

Traditional names were our choice from the off and, once you start on a certain theme you need to continue it. By the time it came to choosing traditional names for our 13th we had such difficulty. We didn’t know what sex the baby would be and all our children have middle names so we had to come up with two names for each gender that we loved enough to name our unborn child.

The girl names were easy enough (and no, I will not reveal what they would have been had the baby been a girl), but choosing the boy names were tough! It seemed that any name we came up was either a diminutive of one we already had or we simply had used it as a middle name.

Once Tim was born the names we settled on seemed to ‘fit’ him perfectly.

Timothy Sebastian.

They suited him, we loved them and soon enough we couldn’t even imagine him with any other name.

Yes, it’s definitely traditional names all the way for us.

But then, we’re not celebrities, are we?

Because if we were we might have to call him something like Cloudy Fungus-Spore or something equally as odd.

If we had (and if we were celebs), would it have made the results of this survey by Two Big Ladies who asked for people’s opinions on the weirdest baby names. With more than 2000 respondents who participated the results are finally revealed.

And here they are!

  1. Moonblood sounds like an incense fragrance or a hippy reference to monthly visits! I quite like names that are nature based; a combination of traditional and hippy, for example, Heather, Rose, Ashe, Hazel, Dene, Heath, Bracken, Rowan… the trick would be to avoid sounding like a garden catalogue. Pairing a more unusual name with a traditional name as a middle name, or the other way around, will give the child a choice when they are older. We started out with quite a traditional name – early 1900s fashion, maybe – so we went with the theme. I also tried to find gender neutral names, or ones where the diminutive is gender neutral. I think I would struggle with 13 of those we liked! Tim is a great name, and your Tim really does suit it!
