Top 5 family cars in 2013

Choosing a new car can be extremely confusing, especially when you consider how many different types of vehicles are now on offer. Whether you’re after a saloon or a more efficient hatchback, there are many things to think about. We’ve rounded up what are in our opinion some of the best family cars currently on the market.

Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi

If you’re after a modern, highly efficient family car, the Ford Mondeo ticks all the boxes. With an average C02 output of just 114g/km and 65.7mpg, the Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles in its price range. The handling and driving experience is incredibly smooth, with a handling experience that makes it feel like a much smaller car. Whether racing down the motorway or navigating small roads on the school run, this car can handle everything.

Skoda Superb

When looking for a family car, choosing a vehicle with ample space is essential. Luckily, the Skoda Superb has this in abundance, with a massive 565-litre capacity boot and enough space to comfortably fit 5 people and lots of luggage, the Skoda Superb is probably one of the best family cars in its price range. Costing just £18,000, you get a very well made vehicle, with a plush interior that feels more expensive than it is.

Volkswagen Passat

Reliability is a must when shopping for a family vehicle, whether it’s for long trips or short school runs. The Passat offers great reliability, reasonable fuel economy (61.4mpg) and Co2 emissions of 119g/km. The Passat is extremely comfortable and won’t leave you feeling exhausted after a long drive, essential when travelling with the family. With prices ranging from £21,000, this isn’t the cheapest option, but then again – you get what you pay for. The interior is very detailed and comes with wonderful electric windows, alloy wheels and climate control as standard.

Volkswagen Golf

While the above vehicles are orientated towards larger families, smaller families needn’t spend as much money on a vehicle. Single child families should look no further than the Volkswagen Golf, a reliable, compact and incredibly versatile car. For a compact vehicle, it has a lot more space than you would expect. The hatchback option has an impressive amount of space, making it ideal for long weekends away and large shopping trips.

Hyundai i30 hatchback

The Hyundai was voted the car of year in 2012 and deservedly so. Its spacious interior makes it ideal for a one-or-two-child family and with a price tag starting at £13,000, this is one of the most affordable family vehicles out there. As you would expect with a vehicle in this price range, the interior isn’t going to be as luxurious as the Passat or Mondeo but then again you won’t need large car loans to finance the purchase.
