Review: Hotpoint Dishwasher (FDYF2100G)

At the beginning of the year our oven and grill broke down, leaving us without for more than six months.  During this time the tumble dryer needed replacing, then the same dryer needed repairing.  Half the toaster stopped working and the washing machine is making noises it shouldn’t be.  Three months ago the dishwasher gave up the ghost.

It hasn’t been a good year as far as appliances go.

When Appliances Online got in touch asking if we would like to try out and review a new dishwasher from Hotpoint I was over the moon.  Not as much though as Caitlin who was keen to point out that expecting her to wash up the dishes after dinner every evening was akin to slave labour.  My natural reaction was to refuse the dishwasher and keep her on dishwashing duty for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything else in between.  But then again, I didn’t want to seem rude to Appliances Online for refusing their very generous offer.

The dishwasher was arranged to be delivered early the following morning in the first time slot of the day.  The driver would call us to confirm the time it would be delivered.  However, the message we received in the morning was to tell us that it wasn’t due to be delivered until 3 and 5 that evening.  Oh well.  It’s a good job we had nothing else planned.

The Hotpoint FDYF2100G is a full sized dishwasher holding 12 place settings easily.  The baskets are generously sized and the racks on the bottom basket conveniently fold down in order to accommodate pots and pans comfortably.  The top basket has adjustable side racks, allowing you to change their height in order to safely and securely hold both shorter and longer stemmed glasses.

The Hotpoint FDYF2100G is very simple and straightforward to use.  With eight settings to choose from you can find the best option for the required job.  For example, the quick wash setting ‘Speed 25′ is perfect for glassware or baby bottles and the numerous plastic beakers that are used once and set aside, used once and set aside, used once and set aside… you people with young children will know exactly what I mean here!

The Daily 60 setting is the most often used one in this house, suitable for most washes.  It’s strong and hot enough to get the dinnerware clean and sparkling yet only taking an hour to do, saving time, energy and money.  There is also a pre-wash available for giving those more stubborn stains a soaking and an intensive wash for those hard-working pots and pans.

The indicator at the top of the machine clearly tells you precisely how long is left of the cycle and there is also a visual rinse aid and salt level indicator allowing you to keep an eye on the overall running of the machine at a glance.

There is a timer delay allowing you to load the dishwasher, then set it to begin at a particular time which is useful if you want to take advantage of lower electricity rates at night time, for example.  And you don’t even have to worry about it waking up the household as even the lightest sleeper will fail to be disturbed by it’s wonderfully low level of noise.  In fact, it’s so quiet that I’ve had to double check I’ve even put the machine on!

This dishwasher is available in three colour ranges and at around £300 depending on the colour chosen you really cannot go wrong.  With an A-rated drying setting and an over-all A-rated energy rating it’s good value for money both from the initial purchase and in terms of general running costs.
